High velocity interparticle collisions driven by ultrasound.

Ultrasonic irradiation of slurries produces high velocity impacts between solid metal particles that are sufficient to cause interparticle melting. Sonication of 5 mum Zn powder as a slurry in alkanes, for example, produces dense agglomerates 50 mum in diameter consisting of approximately 1000 fused particles. Particle size was found to be the most influential parameter in inducing local meltin...

The Cosmological Significance of High-velocity Cloud Complex H

We have used new and archival infrared and radio observations to search for a dwarf galaxy associated with the high-velocity cloud (HVC) known as Complex H. Complex H is a large (Ω & 400 deg) and probably nearby (d = 27 kpc) HVC whose location in the Galactic plane has hampered previous investigations of its stellar content. The H I mass of the cloud is 2.0 × 10(d/27 kpc) M⊙, making Complex H o...

An Accurate Distance to High - Velocity Cloud Complex C

We report an accurate distance of d = 10 ± 2.5 kpc to the high-velocity cloud Complex C. Using high signal-to-noise Keck/HIRES spectra of two horizontal-branch stars, we have detected Ca II K absorption lines from the cloud. Significant non-detections towards a further 3 stars yield robust lower distance limits.

Fuse Spectroscopy of High Velocity Cloud Complex C

We present Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) observations of the sightline toward the Seyfert 1 galaxy Markarian 876, which passes through high velocity cloud (HVC) complex C. This sight line demonstrates the ability of FUSE to measure ionic absorption lines in Galactic HVCs. High velocity absorption is clearly seen in both members of the O VI doublet. This is the first detection of...

Reconstructing Deconstruction: High-velocity Cloud Distance through Disruption Morphology

We present Arecibo L-band Feed Array 21-cm observations of a sub-complex of HVCs at the tip of the Anti-Center Complex. These observations show morphological details that point to interaction with the ambient halo medium and differential drag within the cloud sub-complex. We develop a new technique for measuring cloud distances, which relies upon these observed morphological and kinematic chara...
